I am entering this season of color with renewed enthusiasm for photography. Off I go with my new photo project, ABSTRACTION.

I am playing with a recent personal discovery: looking for Light, Color, Design, and Story—the four elements that increasingly guide my photographic eye.

Thinking in more abstract designs is a stretch for my imagination. I am accustomed to seeing and capturing the whole scene. Now I am learning to look beyond the recognizable landscape and discover something within it—perhaps a shape, a color, a pattern, a movement of light, or simply a feeling.

My son Michael, a professional photographer with a wonderfully imaginative eye, says that my eighties can be like the first years of life, when I had time to play with my imagination of a child.

I like that.

I am playing.

And I am amazed by how much I appreciate the results. Images I might once have discarded because they didn't clearly depict a landscape are now becoming photographs I want to explore.

Perhaps Abstraction is teaching me that I don't always need to know exactly what I am looking at.

Sometimes it is enough to see.
