Abstraction

Since recently recognizing all that I once did that I can no longer do, I am moving toward what feels natural in this ninth decade of personal discovery. I do not want to fixate on what was. I do, however, want to periodically pause and feel gratitude for all that was.

With my photography, that means using smaller cameras, looking closer to home, and staying in the present. I use a monopod rather than a heavy tripod. I use my iPhone and compact cameras rather than my heavy Phase One medium-format camera.

The capabilities of the iPhone to create appealing landscape images are astounding. It has become a new territory for learning and exploration. I don't know where it will take me.

I also find myself using filters more—to transform what I see into something that might resemble an impressionistic painting. Perhaps the want-to-be painter in me is finally finding a way out.

I know this new decade of my life is different by design. I intend to discover what can be, rather than dwell on what was—and to love each remaining moment.
